Hammock Guide

A little help with your hammock purchase...

There are a huge variety of hammocks available and they come from many countries around the world, countries that are lucky enough to experience rather more sunshine than us folk in 'Old Blighty' ! But when the sun shines on our green and pleasant land can you honestly say you would rather be anywhere else other than in your hammock, in your own garden, ignoring all the jobs you should be doing? No... well this page is designed to help you make the right choice on your hammock purchase and maximise the pleasure you get from those sunny afternoons.

All our lovely hammocks begin their happiness giving days in the Ceara region in the North East of Brazil where fine cotton hammock making has long been a tradition. The manufacturers of our hammocks provide over 100 local people with secure jobs, at above average wages, in one of the poorest areas of Brazil and we have been guaranteed that children are not involved with the manufacturing work – enjoyment can only be achieved with an easy mind.
Read on dear friend and make the most of your hammock!

Hammock Styles

Spreader Bar Hammocks

Hammocks with a spreader bar are probably the most popular. They have the "traditional style" that normally springs to mind when thinking of a hammock. The hammock is manufactured with two wooden bars, one at either end of the bed. The bars are an integral part of the hammock and cannot be removed, the bars 'spread' the fabric out fully. Hence the term 'spreader bar'. This allows the user to lie in the hammock in a straight line, similar to a bed. As the hammock is permanently stretched out flat it does make it easier to gracefully hop in and out although do be aware hammocks with spreader bars are more likely to tip if the body position is too close to the edge. Those with very small children would be wise to consider a Banana style hammock which is inclined to be more stable regardless of the laying position. Choose these hammocks for a traditional look and easy access. Comfy rating 10 / 10!

Banana Hammocks

Banana hammocks are simply, hammocks without spreader bars so the body, or a selection of cushions, is used to spread the fabric out. For those who are as yet unaccustomed to the art of getting in and out of hammocks gracefully you may find that banana hammocks require a little more thought on entry and exit...however, once you have mastered the method of entry you will find that not only are banana hammocks supremely more comfortable to lay in, but they are next to impossible to roll out of! Traditionally banana hammocks are designed for the user to lay diagonally but a variety of positions can be adopted, all of which are equally comfortable, so thoughts of your exit strategy soon become a distant memory! Those with small children would benefit from choosing a banana style hammock due to its greater stability when 'wriggling around'. Comfy rating off the scale!!

Hammock Materials

Cotton Hammocks

The majority of our Brazilian hammocks are made from quality, closely woven cotton providing the most comfortable of hammock experiences. Cool and soft on the skin, cotton hammocks are ideal for indoor and outdoor use. Cotton hammocks do require a little more care than their synthetic cousins, so be prepared to protect your new best friend from being left out in the rain or being tucked away whilst still damp. Prolonged lengths of time spent wet or folded damp will weaken the threads and create a nice environment for mould to form, staining your hammock. Our Elltex range of hammocks have been weatherproofed and are UV resistant providing greater durability for our more forgetful customers! The pigments in our coloured cotton hammocks are very durable but please don't forget, as with all coloured fabrics, if left in direct sunlight the cheerful colours will fade. Love your hammock and it will love you right back!

Polyester Hammocks or Parachute Silk Hammocks

Parachute Silk and Polyester hammocks are practical and very useful travelling companions. Light weight and very durable in all weather conditions, particularly Polyester due to it's highly water resistant properties, these synthetic hammocks are ideal for travellers, campers and hiking enthusiasts who need a simple nights sleep to rest their weary bones. Mosquito nets and jungle tents are also available for those folks who require a safer nights sleep in the wilderness!

Canvas Hammocks

Canvas hammocks are durable with good resistance to water. Heavy duty cotton, tightly woven with strong stitching make Canvas hammocks another ideal adventure hammock, although on longer trips you may find the weight becomes an annoyance! Sturdy little characters that don't mind a little bit of mistreatment, but please don't stash your useful companion away whilst wet or damp as they will perhaps not be so useful next time!
The dimensions of our hammocks, maximum loads and suitable stand options are detailed on each page of our site, but if you have a question please do call us. Importantly...please be sure not to exceed the maximum weight criteria on the hammock or the stand as injury could result !

Hammock Stands

Ideally, two palm trees 3.5 metres apart with warm white sand in between! If you're rather short on palm trees there are several perfect solutions!

Two sturdy trees in my garden...

You will require that the trees are no less than 3.5 metres apart to fit even the smallest of our hammocks between them. Ideal space would be 4.0 metres to allow you to hang a large percentage of our S, M, L, & XL hammock range. You will require TWO 'Smartrope' fixings to safely tie the hammock up.

One sturdy tree in my garden...

You will require ONE 'Smartrope' fixing and consider using a Madera stand for the other end. A cost effective and secure solution to an annoying tree shortage!
No trees...But I do have a wall... You will require ONE 'Easy +' wall fixture and consider using a Madera stand for the other end.

Two walls...

You will require TWO 'Easy +' fixtures and a minimum space of 3.5 metres between the walls to fit even the smallest of our hammocks.

No trees, no walls...

But a lovely rolling lawn and plenty of shady spots away from everyone...
It's time to take a look at our selection of timber and metal hammock stands. All the stands are adjustable to take a variety of hammock sizes, naturally the larger stands, particularly the 'Arcus' will not accept S, & M sized hammocks as it's rather grand dimensions will require a hammock of a similar stature. This 'King of stands' is crafted from weatherproof laminated layers of Siberian Larch and is an absolute delight to see!

The 'Olymp' timber arc stand is fully adjustable and large enough to take any of the hammocks on our range. Treated, laminated timber construction with galvanised fixtures – beautiful!

The Apollo timber arc stand is slightly shorter than the 'Olymp' and will take hammocks L, or smaller. Treated, laminated timber construction with galvanised fixtures – equally beautiful!

The first of our metal stands, The Vario-Gala, is adjustable in length and height, meaning this stand will take hammocks M, L, XL & XXL. Weatherproofed powder coating finish to minimise maintenance. Small packing volume and easy to assemble without tools.

The very popular and versatile 'Sumo' stand will take all L hammocks and smaller. Weatherproofed powder coating finish to minimise maintenance. Small packing volume and easy to assemble without tools.

The dimensions of our hammocks, maximum loads and suitable stand options are detailed on each page of our site, but if you have a question please do call us. Importantly...please be sure not to exceed the maximum weight criteria on the hammock or the stand as injury could result !
